Refuge is something we all desire…
Refuge from stress,
from pain,
from loneliness,
from strife,
from hunger,
from biting cold
or baking heat.
Yet, when others seek refuge…
we look out from our places of comfort
and turn a blind eye.
Why?
Shouldn’t our first instinct be…
to grant comfort,
friendship,
warmth,
dignity.
Thank you for this lovely slice this evening. Your poem is powerful and made me stop and think. The photo at the top drew me instantly in – I totally WANT whatever refuge is beyond that gorgeous gate.

Why indeed? Your list of words shows the contrast between the haves and have nots.

So often we talk about wanting to help, to do something impactful, but it’s so much easier to stay in our comfortable place and do nothing, even turn a blind eye. You’ve captured that so well in your poem.

So true, my friend. What does it take to make those who are comfortable, act? It might start with your poem.
