“I just want her to be
happy.”
My sister and I spent
a glorious weekend
with my niece.
“I like him. But,
will it last?”
Over coffee and biscuits,
we reflected
on long walks, good meals,
deep conversation.
“Love is a funny thing,”
I responded
through sips of coffee.
“It’s just
she has had two
big heartbreaks…”
my sister fretted.
“If we enter
every relationship
holding back,
where is the joy?”
Just then,
my niece and her
lanky, smiling boyfriend
entered.
Ahh, there is the joy.
Simple but caught the feeling of the moment. We are going through this with our son so this hit home for me. Always looking for where is the joy in a relationship!

This is beautifully crafted, Beth. Pure joy to read. I love your sage advice:

every relationship
holding back,
where is the joy?”

That sounds very promising. I hope it works out for her this time!

There’s a lot of emotion that comes through very spare language. It may sound funny, but I can hear the listening. A gentle poem with a nice lift at the end.
